Development of a new music culture
With its growing popularity MTV quickly became one of TV's most viewed television stations in the United States. Robert Pittman states ''In programming it's a terrible error to play only what you like" (ROBERT PITTMAN BEGINS A NEW MUSIC CHANNEL). MTV played music that audiences wanted which led to their success.
Their audience expanded as their genre choices expanded. MTV began to split their station into parts for different genres. Bombarded with requests of new bands playing "college rock", today known as Alternative Rock, MTV created and displayed them on its 120 Minutes series, as well as Heavy Metal on Headbanger's Ball and Hip-Hop/Rap on Yo! MTV Raps.
For every genre there was a corresponding image or look. Style and appearance became a large part of viewers' lives, the "network's rise elevated those things into an art form on par with the music itself."
According to MTV's own research, 54% of its audience is in the 12 to 24 age group. This age group watches MTV an average of a half an hour to two hours a day (Music Television and Its Influences). People wanted to look like their favorite artists, and they still do today. Hair styles, clothing, piercings, and attitudes of artists all affected their viewers.
